NW3 Building Firm Foundations in Maths in the Early Years – RECRUITING NOW for 2020-21 FREE of Charge

NW3 Maths Hub are now seeking to recruit schools to join the new, improved

Building Firm Foundations in Mathematics programme (previously Developing Mathematical Fluency).

We have successfully delivered this programme over the past 4 years across the NW region. In 2020-21 we will be offering this to all EY practitioners in  Knowsley, Liverpool, St Helen’s, Sefton and Wigan.

Programme Overview:

Many schools are adopting a teaching for mastery approach in mathematics. The starting point for a school is usually Year 1 and then thought is given as to how the approach is built across KS1 and KS2. Schools naturally want to consider the teaching of mathematics in Reception and how the transition to Year 1 can best support children’s learning.

The schools in this Work Group will start by exploring best practice in Early Years and how the principles might build a secure foundation in mathematics for transition into a teaching for mastery approach in Year 1. It will consider the curriculum – what children need to know and understand; approaches to planning and the inclusion of all children; and appropriate resources and contexts for effective learning.

Who is it for?

This project is aimed at schools who are already committed to teaching for mastery and have previously engaged in a Maths Hub Teaching for Mastery Work Group. A pair of teachers should attend from each school: a Reception teacher and the teacher leading on teaching for mastery within the school. One of the sessions will be aimed at senior leaders within the school, and the headteacher or deputy head should attend this session.

This programme is FREE of Charge to ALL schools.

We have 20 places available, to express an interest in joining the programme please email Lisa Bradshaw- Maths Hub Lead in the first instance:

lisa.bradshaw@three-saints.org.uk

All future correspondence, once places have been allocated will be made by:

Paula Foster- Administrator: paula.foster@three-saints.org.uk

Work Group Lead for the Programme – Gill Hood

Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

To find out more about the programme please see the flyer attached.

COVID- 19 NW3 Maths Hub guidance regarding Work Group activity

Dear All,

Following discussions with the DfE today, I want to inform you of the current position of the Maths Hub.

We recognise it is important for teachers and leaders to stay healthy and focus on supporting contingency plans for their school, local communities and families.

Therefore, we feel it’s sensible to start to reduce non-essential work of the Maths Hub, so with immediate effect we are postponing all school-based face-to-face maths gatherings – Work Group, TRGs and PD events – until after the Easter break when we will review this again. Work Groups Leads should contact their attendees direct, as well as any booked venues, to advise of the postponement.

In the case of school visits, this may still continue as part of the hub’s work at the discretion of the school.

The NW3 Maths Hub team will continue to support schools via email and phone including processing Expressions of Interest for schools and individuals with the funded Primary and Secondary Teaching for Mastery programmes for 2020/21.

PD/SLE Expressions of Interest will also be processed as normal.

Finally, our thoughts go out to all staff working in front line services or perhaps caring for vulnerable family members at this very challenging time.

We thank everyone for their ongoing support and engagement with the NW Maths Hub 3.

Please don’t hesitate in contacting us.

NW3 Maths hub are looking for Secondary Maths Teachers within St Helens, Wigan, Liverpool, Knowsley and Sefton to join our team- please see the attached document for detailed eligibility criteria.
