Effective Diagnostic Assessment to Assist Recovery

NW3 Maths Hub would like to invite ALL primary schools across Liverpool, St Helens, Wigan, Sefton, and Knowsley the chance to attend the following Work Group:

Effective Diagnostic Assessment to Assist Recovery

This is a 2-part Work Group that will explore effective, high quality diagnostic assessment.

Diagnostic assessment gives teachers an understanding of children’s learning so that they can plan their teaching to match the needs of the class or their additional interventions to match the needs of smaller groups or individuals.

According to the Education Endowment Foundation: “High-quality assessment is essential to great teaching, helping us understand what pupils have (or have not) learned. Targeted diagnostic assessments can support teachers to monitor pupils’ progress, particularly as they re-establish classroom routines and recover any learning loss.”

Participants should be either:

·       2 teachers from each school, or

·       1 teacher and one TA

This Work Group is for 2 people to attend as a pair.

Participants will receive an understanding of the principles and practices of diagnostic assessment together with a range of guidance materials to trial. To build capacity within school the selected participants should be able to disseminate relevant approaches.

Dates/times:

Key Stage 1 focus:

Workshop 1 – Monday 14th June (9:00am – 12:00pm)

Workshop 2 – Monday 5th July (1:30 – 3:30pm)

Lower Key Stage 2 focus:

Workshop 1 – Thursday 17th June (9:00am – 12:00pm)

Workshop 2 – Wednesday 7th July (1:30 – 3:30pm)

Upper Key Stage 2 focus:

Workshop 1 – Thursday 24th June (9:00am – 12:00pm)

Workshop 2 – Thursday 8th July (1:30 – 3:30pm)

Venue: Hotel Mercure St Helens Hotel, Linkway W, Saint Helens WA10 1NG.

This Work Group is FREE Of CHARGE.

There are limited spaces on this Work Group. Spaces will be offered on a first come, first served basis.
Schools should select one key stage to sign up for based on either teacher capacity or pupil needs. Although the diagnostic assessment will initially focus on the selected key stage, this can then be disseminated to other key stages.

This Work Group will be repeated in the autumn term.

NCETM Curriculum Prioritisation in Primary Schools Support Materials – OUT NOW

The primary materials mentioned previousy are now available. Please see the link below:

 https://www.ncetm.org.uk/classroom-resources/curriculum-prioritisation-in-primary-maths/

Please share these with your networks.

This is just one way in which Maths Hubs and NCETM are continuing to support ALL schools with prioritisation in Maths as all pupils return back to the classroom.

Primary curriculum prioritisation toolkit
These materials will help teachers assess the extent of pupils’ learning during lockdown, and use this to plan ahead. The key component, customised for every year group, is an evaluation form for class teachers to fill in. It is closely linked to the ready-to-progress criteria contained in the DfE’s primary maths guidance document from last summer, and the NCETM’s PowerPoints exemplifying these criteria.

The accompanying message from the NCETM’s Primary Director, Debbie Morgan is: ‘You can’t possibly teach everything. So, prioritise core areas of maths: those things that will make the most difference.’

Please don’t hesitate in getting in touch with your local Maths Hub – North West 3 if you are interested in connecting to one of the programmes.
As a reminder, North West 3 Maths Hub covers the following geographical areas: Liverpool, Knowsley, St Helens, Sefton and Wigan.

All the Work Groups and resources we promote are of high quality, based on research and nationally accredited.

More bespoke than ever…

The school year 2020/21 has been substantially affected by the impact of the coronavirus outbreak. The knock-on effects on school life and teachers’ working lives have been greatly affected. So, all Maths Hubs work will continue to be flexible and adapt to changing realities. There’s more live online collaboration, often including use of video, for example. In addition, Work Group content will be adjusted to address schools’ recovery from coronavirus-related disruption alongside work on the central maths subject matter of each project.

We look forward to continuing to work with you in the future.

Take care and stay safe.
